Background

The mission of ONIE – Oklahoma Nutrition Information Education (ONIE) / oh-nē / Project is to advance public health and nutrition outcomes for the citizens of Oklahoma through strategic and inventive approaches. As a government-supported initiative, ONIE is dedicated to fostering healthier lifestyles among communities, families, and individuals. By implementing system-wide transformations and designing evidence-based nutrition and physical activity interventions in both English and Spanish, ONIE endeavors to elevate the health and well-being of Oklahomans. Through collaborative efforts with government agencies and community partners, ONIE seeks to drive positive changes in the overall health landscape of the state, promoting long-term wellness and improved quality of life for all residents

Objective

The primary objective of ONIE, was to spearhead the modernization of the Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) system at farmers’ markets and local food access sites. The government recognized the need for an innovative solution that would empower farmers’ markets to streamline their daily operations and transition from traditional manual cash transactions to a more efficient digital platform. By facilitating this transition, ONIE aimed to enhance the effectiveness and overall business efficiency of farmers’ markets while ensuring smoother day-to-day operations. Through this initiative, the government sought to bolster access to fresh and nutritious foods for beneficiaries, while also promoting the growth of local agricultural economies and supporting sustainable food systems in the state.

Solution

App Maisters, in collaboration with the government, proposes an innovative project solution to build an intuitive and user-friendly mobile app for EBT-accepting vendors in farmers’ markets throughout Oklahoma. The app aims to facilitate easy and token-less transactions, empowering vendors to track sales and purchased items effortlessly. Additionally, the solution streamlines reporting and payment processes for market managers, offering real-time insights into vendor performance. By digitizing and optimizing the farmers’ market ecosystem, this government-centric mobile app seeks to promote healthy living, foster economic growth in the agricultural sector, and enhance overall well-being within Oklahoma communities.
